Volunteer Opportunities

So Many Ways to Get Involved!

About Our Volunteer Program

The Springboro Area Historical Society runs entirely on volunteers. We hope you'll consider offering your time to keep the stories of historic Springboro alive. Opportunities include:

Museum Guides/Docents - These volunteers help staff our museum 11 am to 3 pm on Saturdays in April and Fridays and Saturdays May through November. Museum guides serve as hosts for visitors and have general knowledge of the stories and artifacts displayed in the museum. You can sign up for a few shifts -- or many -- whatever works for you! In-person training, written talking points and shadowing are provided to get you started.

Underground Railroad (UGRR) Tour Guides - We offer two primary opportunities for volunteers to help tell the story of how the Springboro community played a significant role in the Underground Railroad. All new tour guides are provided with orientation and have the opportunity to be with an experienced tour guide until comfortable enough to be on their own.

  • Children’s UGRR and Null House Tours - Springboro Schools third graders visit our museum and take a walking tour of historic downtown and the Null House. Volunteers for this opportunity are trained by our UGRR leader. Although volunteers work in a team, each is responsible for independently telling the story. Teachers and parent volunteers accompany each class. Takes place weekday mornings for two weeks from late April to early May.
  • Adult UGRR Tours - This walking tour includes information and stories about the Springboro community's involvement with the Underground Railroad. Groups of about 14 are led on a two-hour tour that starts and ends at the museum. Volunteers receive orientation and then shadow an experienced tour guide until comfortable on their own. Offered on designated weekends April - October.

Event Assistants – We need many hands on deck when we host special events such as the Hotdog Roast or Ice Cream Social.

Springboro Juneteenth Jubilee - This community-wide event celebrates our shared history and freedom. Volunteers participate as Museum Guides, Site Interpreters for local stops on the Underground Railroad, and help with set up and tear down at the museum.

Researchers - Opportunities for volunteer researchers are virtually endless -- from genealogy, artifacts, daily life and Springboro’s first families to the Underground Railroad, local business history, churches, schools, and property history. Research can be conducted at home or at the museum depending on the project. Hours are highly flexible.

You Decide - Do you have a skill that might be beneficial to our organization? Lets talk!
